New Children's Book About Earthquakes

Review of Earthquake, by Susan J. Berger

Apr 2, 2009 Mayra Calvani

Susan J. Berger's latest children's picture book teaches kids everything about earthquakes, from understanding what causes them, to what to do when they happen.

Earthquakes are always a frightening subject, especially for children. Children's author Susan J. Berger's latest nonfiction picture book explains everything a child will want to know about earthquakes, from what causes them, to how to prepare for them, to what to do in an emergency situation whether a person is at home, school, or outside in the street.

This children's nonfiction book will make a valuable addition to any classroom, library, or home book shelf. In a clear, straight forward style, supported by interesting factoids and colorful illustrations that kids will relate to, the author explains: earthquake terms, what happens during and after an earthquake, after shocks, earthquake prediction, the Mercalli and Richter scales, how can people prepare and take precautions, emergency supplies, and much more.

Here's a short excerpt:

What to do in an Earthquake

In a little earthquake, just STAY CALM.

It will be over fast.

Start counting when you feel the first shaking.

Count like you do seconds

(one, one thousand, two, one thousand…)

You probably will not get past three.

In a BIG Earthquake

If you are in bed, STAY THERE.

You already made it safe. When

the shake is over, get your flashlight

and put on your slippers and wait

for your parents.

If you are indoors, STAY THERE.

Move into a hallway if you can, or

stand by an inside wall. You can also

get under a desk or a table and

hang on to it.

(It’s a roller coaster ride. Remember?)

Stay away from the kitchen, windows,

fireplaces and anything that could fall

on you.

This will make a great discussion book, especially in areas proned to earthquakes. It is also an important book for teaching children the basics about this natural disaster, including how to control fear in an emergency situation.

Earthquake has a release date of April 2009. For ordering information, please visit the author's or publisher's website below.
